Trad Or Sport Climbing, Quickdraws Are the Backbone of a Climber’s Gear Rack
A quickdraw is made of two non-locking karabiners connected with a sewn webbing sling. The top karabiner has a straight gate and the bottom karabiner has a bent or wire gate. The bent gate biner should always be the one clipped to the rope. The sling can vary in length from 10cm to 25cm. It is made from either Nylon or Dyneema material and is usually replaceable. The top straight biner is clipped to an anchor on the wall or rock leaving the bottom bent gate biner for the climber’s rope allowing the rope to run freely.
DMM design and manufacture quickdraws at their factory in North Wales. They use colour coded lengths to make racking easier. Slings vary in width from 8mm to 16mm. Their 11mm Dyneema quickdraws come in 12cm, 18cm and 25cm lengths. They have a ribbed rubber retainer sewn into the rope end helping to hold the biner in the correct position. The DMM Spectre comes on a colour coded 11mm dyneema sling. The wire gate keeps weight to a minimum and the nose is shrouded to minimise the chance of the gate being opened accidently. The Spectre features an I-Beam back construction for strength and lightness. A fantastic all round quickdraw that is suitable for sport, trad or alpine climbing. DMM’s 16mm Nylon sling comes in 12cm and 18cm lengths that also uses their colour coding system. The wider webbing is easier to hold when working routes meaning they are favoured by sports climbers. The DMM Truclip quickdraw comes on a 16mm Nylon sling. Hot forged, its ergonomic shape makes handling and clipping simple. The Truclip is a great unit for any type of climbing.
Wild Country are owned and managed by climbers. All their quickdraws are anodised and for safety are also rope end identified, the red karabiner is meant to take the rope. Their quickdraws come on Wild Country specified Dyneema either in 10mm or 12mm widths. 10mm sling goes onto more extreme units and enhances their light weight. The Xenon quickdraw offers maximum security with the minimum of fuss and weight. It weighs very little yet fits into the hand perfectly. Their 12mm sling complements their other karabiners such as the the Wild Wire quickdraw which comes with a tadpole to keep the bottom unit solidly held in the correct orientation. All Wild Country quickdraws come in 10cm, 15cm or 20cm lengths whether trad or sport climbing.
